Housing & Cages: Space = Health
Minimum sizes (UK recommended):
- Rabbits: Min 3m² + run; stand/stretch fully; 15–21°C
- Guinea Pigs: 0.7m² for 1, 1m²+ for 2; flat wide space, no high levels
- Hamsters: 100×50cm+; deep bedding (6–10cm) for burrowing
- Chinchillas: Tall cage 90×60×120cm; 15–20°C only
- Safe bedding: Paper pulp, aspen, hemp, fleece Avoid: Cedar/pine shavings, corn cob, clay litter Cleaning: Spot-daily; full clean every 3–7 days.
- Small Breeds (e.g., Yorkshire Terrier, French Bulldog): Typically fit into crates around 24 inches. They benefit from a cozy corner but do not need a massive crate.
Grooming: Keep Fur & Skin Healthy
Rabbits: Short-haired = weekly brush; Long-haired = daily. No full baths — damp cloth only. Trim nails every 4–6 weeks.
Guinea Pigs: Short = weekly brush; Long = 2–3x/week. Butt-clean only if messy. Nail trim monthly.
Hamsters/Gerbils: Self-groom; no water baths! Provide chinchilla sand occasionally.
Chinchillas: NO WATER BATHS — daily dust bath with special sand to protect thick fur.
Grooming = health check for lumps, mites, overgrown teeth/nails
Dogs: For your pet’s health and appearance, regular grooming is essential. Brushing your pet’s coat can help keep it shiny and free of mats, tangles, and other problems. Breeds with long hair, for example, may need more grooming than others.
Additionally, trimming your pet’s nails is necessary for their health. Nail overgrowth can cause pain and make it hard to walk. In the event that you’re not happy managing your pet’s nails, consider taking them to an expert custodian.
